Unofficial alternate firmware for Mutable Instruments Plaits — v1.5 — by Narti Live

DUB STAB PLAITS

Generative, controlled dub techno stabs from a Plaits. Clocked from TRIG. Always in C minor.
No effects inside: patch your own delay and reverb after it.

Before flashing: Plaits FREQUENCY knob at 12 o’clock, computer volume around 80 %. While it plays, the level meter (LEDs 1–4) should show the two green LEDs lit — yellow may flicker, red should stay off.

Unofficial firmware — not made, tested or supported by Mutable Instruments. Use it at your own risk.

New: SEQ PLAITS

A second firmware: all 24 stock Plaits 1.2 engines, untouched, played by a built-in generative melody sequencer. Always in a minor key, TRIG = clock (130 BPM without a cable), V/OCT sets the key, the small knobs set density, length and speed.

Flash from this page

The update travels as audio — this page plays it into your Plaits. Unofficial firmware, use at your own risk.

  1. Unplug all cables. Headphone out → Plaits MODEL.
  2. FREQUENCY at 12 o’clock. Hold LEFT and power on.
  3. Volume ~80 %, press Play: the two green LEDs lit, red off.
  4. Wait 2:42 — the module restarts into DUB STAB PLAITS.
More details
  • Use a 3.5 mm stereo → mono cable (or an adapter plus a patch cable).
  • In update mode FREQUENCY is the input level. Let go of LEFT when the LEDs show update mode.
  • No Bluetooth, notifications off (Do Not Disturb), keep this tab in front.
  • LEDs 1–4 are the level meter: too few lit → raise the volume, red → lower it. Adjust in the first seconds, then don’t touch anything.
  • All LEDs blinking red: press LEFT, nudge FREQUENCY and play again. Going back: play the official Plaits WAV the same way.

Ready. The file (14.8 MB) loads when you press Play.

01

What it is

Dub chords

C minor DUB voicings: root, 5th, 7th, 3rd and 5th up. Never out of key.

TRIG = clock

16th pulses drive a 16-step generative sequencer. Start the clock and it plays from step 1. Unpatched: 120 BPM.

One-knob envelope

FREQUENCY: pluck → dub stab → long swell, filter included.

Root CV out

AUX: the chord root as 1 V/oct for a second synth.

More details
FREQUENCYAttack, decay and filter envelope on one knob. Left = short dark pluck, noon = dub stab, right = long swell with a big filter sweep.
LEFT + FREQUENCYOctave 1–5 (noon = 3).
RIGHT + FREQUENCYResonance, limited: it never self-oscillates.
TIMBRE attenuverterDensity: how many of the 16 steps play.
FM attenuverterLength of the pattern, 1–16 steps.
MORPH attenuverterSpeed: 1/2 · 1/4 · 1/8 · 1/8T · 1/16 (centre) · 1/16T · 1/32 · 1/32T.
Hold LEFT 1 sNEW pattern — LEDs pulse green, then sweep.
Hold RIGHT 1 sChords / single notes for the playing model (remembered per model). Single notes: a melody in the scale that follows the chords. ACID starts mono; hold RIGHT for acid chords. Model LED yellow = chords, red = single notes.
Both buttons2 s: CV TUNE. 4 s: the original CV input calibration.
LEDsMoving a control shows its value for a second: envelope = yellow bar, resonance = red bar, density = green bar, length = yellow bar, octave = one yellow LED, speed = one LED (red for triplets).
Random LFOAlways on (speed 20, depth 15): drifts HARMONICS, TIMBRE, MORPH and the filter.

Jacks

TRIGClock in, counted as 16ths. When the clock stops (no pulse for 4 clock periods, 0.5–4.5 s) the sequencer goes back to step 1, so starting the clock always starts the pattern from the beginning; plugging the cable in does the same. Unpatched: internal 120 BPM.
V/OCTMoves the progression by scale degrees (D = ii, Eb = III …), snapped to C minor.
MODELSelects the chord model.
HARMO · TIMBRE · MORPHCV for those parameters, attenuated: a full ±5 V moves them only ±15 % around the knob.
LEVELVCA on OUT.
FMNot used.
OUT / AUXThe chords / the chord root as 1 V/oct, C3 = 0 V, held until the next chord.

Model 8 ACID plays a mono acid bass line with the pattern — chord roots, octaves and fifths, one octave above the chords, with slides and accents, always in key. On ACID, FREQUENCY sets the filter envelope amount; decay is fixed, saw wave, warm character.

How a pattern is made

NEW picks 1, 2 or 4 chords, gives every step a rank (off-beats first) and some accents. DENSITY plays the steps ranked below it, so the groove grows without changing.

More details
  1. Chords. 1, 2 or 4 per pattern (35 / 40 / 25 %). The first is the tonic 70 % of the time; the next are weighted towards iv, v, VI and III, never the same twice in a row.
  2. Sections. Each step takes the chord of its part of the bar; 6 % get a passing chord.
  3. Ranks. Off-beat bonus plus chance. The third 16th of each beat plays first — the classic dub stab.
  4. Accents. 35 % on the strong off-beats, 15 % elsewhere; an accent opens the filter further.
  5. Length and speed. LENGTH loops the first N steps; SPEED turns each TRIG pulse into 1/2 … 1/32T steps.

Chord model, octave, resonance and the pattern are saved 2 s after a change.

Root CV

AUX sends each chord’s root — 1 V/oct, C3 = 0 V — held until the next chord. Tune it once: hold both buttons 2 s, match two octaves with FREQUENCY, tap to save.

CV TUNE step by step
  1. Patch AUX to your synth’s V/OCT. Hold both buttons 2 s.
  2. AUX alternates every 2 s: C3 (0 V, LEDs 1–4 green) and C5 (+2 V, LEDs 5–8 green). OUT plays the same notes as a sine.
  3. Tune your synth so the low note is a C, then turn FREQUENCY until the high note is exactly two octaves above. The red LED shows the trim.
  4. Tap a button to save.

Range about −2 V to +3 V. If a held note slowly sinks back to 0 V, that module’s output is AC-coupled and the CV can’t work on it.

Max for Live

Three devices for Ableton Live, made from the firmware: the same sequencer and sound engines, synced to Live — with a root note (C–B), a scale (Natural minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Harmonic minor), a minor chords only switch and chords or mono notes.

Dub Stab MIDIMIDI effect: the sequencer sends chords, the ACID line or the roots to any synth.
Dub Stab SynthInstrument: the 8 sound models, played from your MIDI.
Dub Stab PlaitsInstrument: both together, like the module.

More details
  • Needs Live 12 Suite, or Live with Max for Live. Drag a .amxd onto a track and press Play: the sequencer follows Live’s transport.
  • CHORDS switch: on, the sequencer plays chords; off, it plays mono notes — a line in the scale that follows the chord progression.
  • Voicing: DUB (root 5th 7th 3rd 5th), Triads, 7ths (any inversion), Mixed, or DEEP — the G minor firmware’s open dub techno shapes (Root G + DEEP = the same chords). Density, Steps, Rate 1/2–1/32T, Octave.
  • Seed: the pattern is made from a number and saved with your set. Two devices on the same seed play the same pattern — one for chords, one for the ACID line.
  • A played MIDI note transposes the pattern within the scale (C3 = no change), like V/OCT on the module.
  • Models: DUB SAW, VA, WAVESHAPE, FM, PHASE DIST, VHIKK, STRINGS (own string machine with ensemble), ACID. Drift = the slow random LFO.
  • NEW MELODY: a new mono line and ACID line over the same chords. RANDOM: new Harmonics, Timbre and Morph, like holding RIGHT on the module.
  • Grainy dark grey panels, yellow sequencer knobs, blue synth knobs and a small green phosphor oscilloscope.
  • Dry, like the module: add Live’s Echo and Hybrid Reverb after it.

v1.0
First release. Generative dub techno stabs in key, 8 chord models (model 7 STRING MACHINE, model 8 ACID bass line one octave above the chords), 16-step sequencer on the attenuverters, clean levelled output, AUX = 1 V/oct root CV with CV TUNE, HARMO · TIMBRE · MORPH CV attenuated to ±15 %. Android app with tape echo and reverb.
v1.1
Two versions: C minor (all 7 chords, DUB voicing) and C minor DEEP — open dub techno shapes: DUB m7, open m9, stacked 4ths (m11), 7sus4, sus2, fifths, open minor, m(add9), one shape per pattern most of the time, no major chords. Hold RIGHT switches each model between chords and single notes (ACID: mono line or acid chords) instead of randomising the knobs. The model LED shows it: yellow = chords, red = single notes.
v1.2
Both versions (C minor and Cm DEEP): starting the TRIG clock starts the sequencer from step 1. When the clock stops (no pulse for 4 clock periods, between 0.5 and 4.5 s) it goes back to the first step and waits; plugging the clock in does the same. Short hiccups in the clock do not reset it.
v1.3
Model 6 is now VHIKK, inspired by the Forge TME Vhikk X (CHIPTUNE is gone; every other model and the sequencer are unchanged): a carrier / modulator pair per chord note and its own space. HARMONICS = WARP (left phase modulation, noon clean, right ring modulation), TIMBRE = carrier feedback (sine → warm saw-like), MORPH = SPACE: a dark comb echo tuned to the chord that glides from chord to chord, and past noon a frequency shifter in its loop that makes the repeats spiral. FREQUENCY stays the envelope. Firmware and both apps v1.3. VHIKK demo.
v1.4
Cleaner output: with FREQUENCY to the right (long attacks and decays), stacked chords could push the output stage into soft clipping. The level limiter now catches every peak at once and holds it, so the sound stays clean at any envelope setting. A voice taken over by a new chord no longer jumps in level. Firmware and both apps v1.4.
v1.5
Lighter on the Plaits processor: the chord voices now compute their envelopes once per block instead of once per sample, the oscillators wrap their phases without branches, and the limiter no longer divides on every sample. The busiest models use 8–17 % less CPU (FM 7644 → 6355 instructions per block, VHIKK with space and shifter peak 10506 → 9579, out of 18000), leaving more headroom so the module never drops audio under heavy CV and fast clocks. Same sound, same controls. Firmware and both apps v1.5.
app 1.0.1
Screen recordings now include the app’s sound (Android “record device audio”).
M4L 1.0
Max for Live devices: Dub Stab MIDI, Dub Stab Synth, Dub Stab Plaits — root, four minor scales, minor chords only, CHORDS on/off (mono notes).
